Your Name: Madison Teramoto
Name of Business: High Tech Elementary North County Profession: 1st Grade Teacher Your 1st Period Teacher: Ms. Courtney Contact Person (On Site): Ms. Jones Email: [email protected] My first impressions of High Tech Elementary was the school seemed nice! The morning looked very busy. I heard a lot of people talking. When I first arrived at my site, I met up with my mentor in the copy room and helped her print worksheets for her class. I saw a lot of teachers going in and out of the copy room. I heard whirling sounds of the copy machine printing paper. I also smelled coffee and other breakfast food items. I spoke with some of the staff there and they were very kind. I think a typical work day at this site is going in meetings in the morning, printing copies of worksheets, and then teaching kids for the rest of the day. There are a few teachers for every grade and also teachers that teach specific things such as art. There are also other staff too. The atmosphere of the rest of the day was very calm. I think it is business casual because people there wear nice clothes but not like office clothes. It is a school, so teachers have to be there. I think that if a teacher was sick or not able to make it to school, they would have to notify the school so something can be arranged for their class. Like I mentioned before, the dress code was business casual, which I liked. It made me feel less nervous about Career Day. I really enjoyed my Career Day! My mentor and the kids were really nice! One thing that stood out to me was when Ms. Jones was teaching her students about plagiarism and how it was important to be able to restate information they learned in their own words. This surprised me because this was in a first grade classroom and from my personal experience, I didn’t learn about plagiarism until much later in elementary school. I was very impressed and thought it was good to teach them early on so that they can start figuring out how to restate information. I also really enjoyed helping kids with their work. I expect the professional world there to be like how I saw it with more of planning out lessons and having meetings with other teachers. A class where I learned a skill that was helpful for my Career Day is math class because I learned how to create solutions and improved on collaboration. I applied this to my Career Day by finding solutions when students need help and working with my mentor and her students.
