Career Day Interview Questions
For Career Day, I shadowed a 1st grade teacher at High Tech Elementary North County. I asked her the following questions and recorded the answers.
What in your educational background most prepared you for this job?
When I was in middle school, I joined a band. That is where I learned kids can do anything. The Director pushed the students and had higher expectations. It helped me figure out she wanted be like that.
What specific skill training helped you prepare for this job?
Student teaching is very important in order to become a teacher. It teaches how to lead a class and be a leader. Its also important to look back on experience and apply it to the classroom.
What advice do you have to young people who are interested in this profession/field?
To eat during the day, drink water. Self care is very important to be a teacher. Its important to be at your best because it is about the kids. They don't get to choose who they get as a teacher so you have to be your best. Its also important to balance work with personal life. You have to take it seriously and work for the kids. Its important to improve and be invested in it and be top notch.
How did you decide to be a teacher?
When I decided when I was six years old. My elementary school teacher inspired me and made me realize I wanted to work with kids. I liked helping people and making pretend permissions slips. Now I make real permission slips.
Do you have a teaching styles that works for teaching your class ad how do you develop it?
I have my own style which is connecting lessons to the real world. It shows that everything we learn is bigger than the classroom. I give importance to work, and encourage leadership.
Are there any past experiences from when you were a student that you look back on that has helped you become a better teacher?
I had a counselor in high school who told me not to take 3 AP classes that I wanted to take. It was the first time an adult said I can't be successful. My parents told me that i could be anything so I disagreed. No one should tell kids they can't do something. I want to teach to encourage kids to push themselves and be who they want to be.
On my career day I stayed in the class and helped students. We did Math in the morning and I helped a kid with the ten blocks that helped kids count by ten. I also helped kids with English with words they didn't know and help them sound out words. I also observed different teaching techniques that were used when kids were behaving badly. Instead of stopping class to acknowledge what they are doing and give the attention they want, the teacher redirected the other kids attention towards the lesson. After the lesson, the teacher talked to the badly behaving student individually. It was effective and peaceful way of teaching kids. I also helped dismiss kids for recess and lunch.
