April 11, 2018 The article I read was from Los Angeles Times. The date of publication is April 10, 2018. The name of the article is "What ails America? The answer varies from state to state" The author of the article is Melissa Healy The article is about health of Americans now compared to the past. The article also compares the most common causes of death between different states. Overall Americans are have better health then they did in the past. American's health overall are improving but that progress is in danger because of obesity, depression, suicide and substance abuse. The morality rates have nearly declined almost 22% over 26 years which is from 745 deaths per 100,000 people in 1990 to 578 per 100,000 people per year in 2016. In 2016, the state with the highest average life expectancy was Hawaii with 81.3 years. The state with the lowest average was Mississippi with 74.7 years. Heart disease and lung cancer were the top two causes of death of Americans in the 2016, the same as 1990. Self harm, opioid use disorders, and alcohol related liver diseases became a more common cause of death. 10 million Americans live with a serious mental condition and more than seven million people younger than 18 experience extreme emotional disturbance. In 2014, an American's life expectancy was ranked 43rd in the world even though the US spends more per person on health care than any other country. There is a disconnect between the large sums of money being spend on healthcare and its slight improvements in health. Public health programs only receive an estimated 2.5% of US healthcare dollars and the budget of The Prevention and Public Health Fund had been cut again in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018. These events happened in the US. This article contains information from 1990s to 2018. This event happened because of the reports US public health scholars wrote down. They were also a part of the Global Burden of Disease group. They kept track of the average life expectancies for people in different states in different times. They also kept track of the most common causes of death between 1990s to 2016. I think that more work should not only go into research of life expectancies and causes of death but also organizations that help prolong the lives of people and educate them on ways to take care of their health. I was surprised to learn how underinvested these organizations are. I also think there should be more focus on mental health and substance abuse because it is affecting the quality of life of people in America and deaths relating to it are becoming more common. March 5, 2018 The article I read was from Los Angeles Times. The date of publication is March. 5, 2018 The name of the article is "Separating children and parents at the border is cruel and unnecessary". The author of the article is The Times Editorial Board. The article is about separation of parents that illegally crossed the border from their kids that are US citizens. It is a cruel thing and causes traumatizes kids and distress parents. The Trump Administration is eager to limit illegal immigration. The article is about the horrible effects from the escalated roundups of that grab illegal immigrants living in the US. They do this even if they don´t have a criminal record. They send the parents back and put the children in child centers. The Trump Administration is willing to stop illegal immigration by using cold-hearted enforcement to roundup illegal immigrants. No matter how clean their criminal record is or how productive they are as members of the community. The Department of Homeland Security is being sued over the practice and ignored a request asking how many children were separated from their parents. In December, a coalition groups filed complaints against Homeland Security because of this practice. When parents and children cross the border and tell border agents they want to apply for asylum, under the Obama administration, the families are often released in the care of a relative, organization, or family detention center. Under the Trump administration, the parents, who sneak across the border and turn themselves in are charged with crime and children are sent away from them. Activists believe this is to send the message, ¨Dare to seek asylum at border and we´ll take your child.¨ This event happens in the US. This event happened since Trump took office. During the US governments 2017 fiscal year, which ended in September 30th, the US border agents made 310,531 arrests, a decline of 24% from the previous year and from the previous year and and fewest overall since 1971. Immediately after Trump won the election, the number of people being taken into custody increased again. I think that separating parent and child no is cruel and unnecessary for illegal immigrants. Asking for help should never be have consequences that make everything worse. I think that there should be special rights for illegal immigrants who´s children are born in the US so their family does get separated and for more offered to them if they ask for help from Border patrol agents. Jan 23, 2018 The article I read was from CNN. The date of publication is January 22, 2018. The name of the article was "The only ones who lost" The authors of the article are Salma Abdelaziz, Arwa Damon, and Muwafaq Mohammed, The article was about the aftermath of the nine month long battle to recapture Mosul´s Old City from ISIS. Many people were killed during the battle and the city is in ruins. Its been six months since Mosul was liberated from ISIS but the families are still suffering. In Mosul, an estimated ten thousand civilians were killed and buried in the rubble left from the nine month long battle to recapture Mosul, Iraq's Old City. A third of them were killed in coalition airstrikes. The US-led coalition fighting ISIS publicly released their own data. It acknowledges only three hundred "credible" allegations of civilian casualties due to coalition strikes. Mosul's government received roughly nine thousand requests about missing persons. Three thousand of the bodies were dug up and received by the local health department but there are still thousands of bodies rotting out in the open. In the article, there are also stories of the people who live there. Twenty three year old Mustafa Nader and his family look for the body of his great uncle with only one shovel. A five year old girl's most precious item is the doll house found in the rubble that used to be her home and loves it because she had no home of her own. Families still struggle to find the remains of their loved ones and their home. This event happened in Mosul, Iraq. The battle for Mosul ended 6 months ago. This event happened over a nine month campaign where Iraqi forces, backed with the US coalition which helped them take back Iraq´s second largest city. During the battles buildings and artifacts dating back centuries were destroyed and roads littered with the corpses of soldiers and civilians. When the Iraqi forces and US coalition won, ISIS blew up the historical Old City Mosque, al-Nuri Mosque, that stood for more than 800 years. I think that its a horrible situation for the people living there. People loose family members so easily and children live in fear of being killed. I believe that the lives of the people come first and that more work should be put into helping transport the civilians into another country of environment instead of airstrikes and weapons. https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/22/middleeast/mosul-survivors-intl/index.html I will comment on Mariana's and Sheyla's blog posts. |
