Project Description:
In this project my class tried printmaking. Printmaking is the art of carving intricate images into a surface like soft block or wood and printing it onto another surface such as an paper. When the print block is removed, it leaves behind copy of the carved image
Process Description:
To make my print, I drew my design in my sketchbook and got critique from my peers on what to add or fix. Next, I added it to my second draft and scanned it to make a copy. Then, I cut out the paper so it is the size of the soft block. I glue it on and put Mod Podge on it to transfer the image. I waited for it to dry then scrubbed off the paper with water and a sponge. Once the image was successfully transferred onto the block, I got carving tools and made a relief print. I carved it on a benchhook. I did my first proof on proof paper to see how my print will turn out. I used the block printing ink on plexi glass and applied it with the brayer. Finally, I tried two techniques called Chine Collè and A la Poupèe. The Chine Collè is a technique where you cut out paper and make a background where the image will be printed on. The A la Poupèe technique is similar but instead of paper, you paint the background before you print on it. Then, I did a Final Print of both techniques and turned it in.

My Weekend

Subject Matter:
My prints represents a typical weekend for me. I wanted to express how it felt and what it looked like. Usually, I stay up late with a mug of tea and do my hobbies. The night causes my sources of light to look even more bright and beautiful. My print is important to me because I value my weekend and I wanted to capture the stillness and the peaceful atmosphere that I feel every week.
Symbolism:
The imagery I chose was a window, a phone, a lightbulb, mug, and the moon. I chose those images because I thought items that would stand out in the dark and I usually have most of them at home. I chose neon colors for the print with the cut out paper because I thought it would stand out against the black ink and represented how happy I feel on a Saturday. The watercolor print colors were based on how I feel on a Sunday night. It is more drippy looking and sad.
Design and Techniques:
I designed my print by drawing it in my sketchbook and printing on a seperate piece of paper. Then I used mod podge to transfer the image on to the block. Then I started carving it. I carved out the parts I didn’t want to print ink. I used a striped background to fill in the background. In example prints I saw some artists use a lot of lines in their carvings and full single colors for their items. I incorporated that into my print. I used paper cut outs and watercolor techniques for my final prints.
Spanish Personification:
El cielo nocturno es una manta reconfortante.
Incluso las velas se convierten en estrellas por la noche.
El fin de semana es como un mundo diferente.
